Some people spend a lot of their lives with very little opportunity to travel out of their small part of the world, and get butterflies at the thought of flying! (Ed: looks in the mirror); other people manage to travel the world! DblGnume is as well traveled as they come, with a fantastic photography portfolio to match. He’s taken time out to answer our questions, so read on to find out the origin of his new name.
What did you last eat?
CHICKEN WITH SUN-DRIED TOMATO CREAM SAUCE ? I love to cook and this one looked so good, so yup, cooked it and it was yummy!
Who are you? You used to be CaptRosha and now you are DLbGnume?! Why the name change?
I listen to several of the Beam Partners, and one thing I hear a lot about, is to think about your “brand”. So, I decided I really needed to do just that. I originally chose CaptRosha because that was the name I was using in MechWarrior Online. The reason I was using that in MWO, was because I used to play MechWarrior 2 way back in the 90’s, and that was the name I used then. I thought I would bring it back in case any old friends from back in the day would play MWO would be able to recognise me.
But why Gnume now? Well, I started using the name Gnume back in 2005 or so whenever EverQuest 2 came out. At the time, I thought it was clever because I was playing a Gnome Dirge…and I named him “Gnume Awldewe” for “New Me, Old You”. Silly I know!! Anyway, I kept using Gnume in pretty much every game since.
I am also an amateur photographer and I have a Facebook Page and Website that I use for my photography called “Digital Life by Gnume”. I have had that going since around 2010. Hence, my brand that I have already sort of started using was Digital Life by Gnume! I was thinking I take digital photographs of people (hence “Life”) and voila, DLbGnume was born! I may evolve it a little further and just drop it all to Gnume, but we shall see!
Share a little about yourself.
I live near Montgomery, Alabama! I am a retired US Air Force officer. Retired back in 2010 and we settled near my wife’s hometown and family. Prior to that, I’ve lived in Hawaii, South Dakota, Colorado, Japan, Arkansas, and Mississippi for a short time. We currently have 2 miniature schnauzers that are just wonderful. They both have amazing personalities and they are so different! One will bound up the stairs without a thought and the other…NOPE, Not Gonna Do Stairs!
I also have a daughter that is off to college…and a wife that is not a gamer whatsoever ?. She doesn’t quite “get” the whole streaming thing or the whole gaming thing, but she understands that I enjoy it. She does demand equal or more time though ? I also work a full-time job M-F so it really limits my streaming time to pretty much Saturday and Sunday afternoons if I am not doing something with the family.
Oh man … TV Shows that I like! That could take up an entire interview by itself! I am definitely a movie/TV junkie. Sci-Fi/Fantasy are my favorites and of course, Super Hero shows. The wife and I watch a lot of shows together as well. A lot of the US Prime Time shows. But, some of my favorites … lot of the CW Shows (Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, The 100, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries, and many more). Oh, and of course, I LOVE DOCTOR WHO!!! I just don’t get British TV though and the way they do “Seasons”. Maybe you can shed some light on that…why do we get like 7 episodes then wait 2 years! ? (Ed: Yes it sucks for us too! – probably too many holidays at the BBC – binge watching is being worked on)
Have you ever bought something online and instantly regretted it?
Well, since I buy a lot of stuff through Amazon Prime, if I don’t like it, I can return it ? I did just return an Apple Watch band though! Nothing major…if it’s something big or expensive, usually try to find it in a brick/mortar store to check it out first, THEN buy it online!
Can you remember the first game that you played?
Oh man…I guess you are talking “video games”. And yes, it was Pong! One of my friends in school was able to get his parents to spring for it and we would play the heck out of it! Also, had several of those little handheld electronic games that had little LED Dashes that you moved around. Or a little handheld breakout game. The first console I actually owned was the Odyssey 2. I remember thinking it was so cool because it had a keyboard and you could actually buy a cartridge that let you program in Basic. That and the KC Munchin Game where you could create your own levels. The best game was the Dragon game…it was actually a Board Game that you would play out certain things on the game. Of course, I just played the things I wanted and eventually just tossed the board game part.
When Arcades started popping up all over in the late 70’s, early 80’s, I pumped a TON of quarters into those things. Asteroid, Frogger, Galaxian, and many many more. My BEST game was Defender. I could play that game for HOURS on 1 quarter. It had this glitch that when you reached a score of 900,000 (I think that was the score) then everything you killed or scored at that point would grant you an extra ship. The score would roll over at 1 million. When I would get tired, I would just walk away and there would be enough ships that the game would just sit there killing them for like 10 or 15 minutes!
You’re favorite game ever: What is it?
I guess I will have to go with Defender that I just talked about above! One thing I remember about playing it was there was this little café in my hometown that had a Defender machine in it and they would give whoever had the high score at the end of the week a free meal. ? Probably why I love to eat and game now!
Beam, What brought you to Beam?
I started on Twitch, probably a little over a year ago now? I started on Beam on August 4th of 2016. I was watching Machiina stream on Twitch and noticed he said something about re-streaming on Beam at the same time, so I followed his link over to Beam and I was so impressed with everything about Beam, that I decided that was the service I wanted to explore more of myself. He turned me on to Phone_Microwave, RocketBear, and Lagby. The community at Beam won me over almost instantly!
As to why I started streaming? I guess because I thought it would be a good way to record my MechWarrior Online matches without me needing to remember to start up FRAPS or something else to record it. I couldn’t get ShadowPlay to record reliably anymore so voila, I thought streaming would be fun! I didn’t really expect to get viewers and since I knew I wouldn’t have a set schedule, I thought having the VODs handy would be cool. So, as people actually started coming into the channel and talking, I found out that it made playing the game even more fun for me. Interacting with people who were interested in what I was doing was just amazing.
What was it about the Xtremes team that inspired you to come across?
To be honest, I never thought I would make it as an Xtreme’s Member. I didn’t think I streamed enough. I did jump at the chance to be a Citizen. I love watching streamers on Beam and typically will have like 3 or 4 streams up at once and just hop around the tabs. I like helping people learn how to stream and I learn a lot as well. It’s also fun interacting with the streamer and their chat too. Beam is amazing in that area. I can pop into someone’s stream and a lot of the time, I will see other viewers from other streamer chats that I have watched in the past. And pretty soon, it’s not just the streamer welcoming you into the channel, you start getting to know other viewers and they start welcoming you too. So I love that I have found a Community! Streamers I like to watch, as well as others with the same interests and tastes as my own.
Have you ever had a bad experience while streaming?
I have been fortunate in that area and have NOT had any type of bad experience. Probably because I am so inconsistent with my streaming that very few every pop by in the first place! ?
If someone comes into your channel while you’re streaming, what makes them a great viewer?
I won’t call out someone just hanging out in my stream, so until they post a comment, I won’t say anything to them. So, it helps me out if someone will just say hi so then I feel like it’s ok to talk with them. I love it when people ask me questions about the game I am playing. I love to talk about games, movies, TV shows, geek stuff. I find it easier to “chat” if someone at least gives me some feedback as to what they want to chat about. The game I stream the most is MechWarrior Online. It’s still a pretty niche game I suppose and it doesn’t’ have a huge playerbase. Most people that just randomly stop by my channel think it’s a new game because they have never heard about MWO. They are surprised when I tell them it’s been out since like 2013! So, I find the game a lot of fun and love talking about it and maybe getting some new players to give it a try. It does have a pretty steep learning curve!
We all get streaming slumps, and quiet days – how do you deal with it, what’s your advice for someone going through that?
Honestly, I am not the person to give advice on this subject because it has not happened to me ? I yearn to stream more often than I am able so I haven’t hit any slumps yet. However, I would say that everything in moderation. I do at times get tired of playing MWO for example. I get burnout on the same game after a while. I find just taking a break from it and maybe playing something else for a bit helps me get past that burnout and after a while, that urge to play MWO comes back and I am back in the groove. I would think streaming slumps might work the same way for me. I would just take a break from it for a bit and do some other things for a while to take my mind off the streaming. Now, for someone with a pretty big following and a consistent schedule, that might be kind of difficult. I know they run the risk of losing viewers. But, I would say until you get yourself in the right frame of mind, you aren’t really doing yourself any good and you are probably doing a disservice to your faithful viewers.
As a member of the Xtremes team, you are responsible for upholding our brand ethics and reputation, has this changed your attitude to the way you stream or affected you in any way?
Not in the least! My ethics and such were already lined up with everything Xtremes meant. I didn’t have to change anything to conform to Xtremes, it was just a natural fit. It’s almost like someone based it off me!! ?
How would you like the Xtremes team to grow?
I guess…I would like to see more Beam Partners involved with Xtremes. I feel like that is a great way to expand Xtremes and to get word out that there is organized help available and an organized community dedicated to helping maintain the community feel of Beam. I feel like the more Partners we get on board, the bigger our reach and that we can broaden our community.
